WHEN APPLYING FOR A PERMIT IN ALLEN TOWNSHIP
FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE
(The total permit application process will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks, please plan accordingly)
You will need 2 permits for most projects, a zoning permit from the township and a building permit from the inspection agency. *
Fill out and turn in ZONING PERMIT APPLICATION with the appropriate fees to Allen Township (see fee schedule below).
Fill out and turn in BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATION to the township along with 2 sets of construction plans. (Construction plans are a detailed drawing and a complete description of all materials used in completing the project. Please have the person responsible for completing the project draw up the plans.) This will be turned over to the Inspection Agency. The Inspection Agency will contact you regarding Building Permit fees.
The Township will notify you when the ZONING PERMIT has been approved. The BUILDING PERMIT will be sent by the Inspection Agency.
When you have the approved Zoning Permit AND Building Permit, you may proceed with the project. DO NOT SCHEDULE ANY CONSTRUCTION BEFORE YOU HAVE BOTH PERMITS IN HAND.
Call the inspector for appropriate inspections (877 392-9445), and for any questions regarding building codes.
When the project is complete, the Inspection Agency will notify the Township of the final inspection and will issue the Certificate of Occupancy.
*Sheds and fences will need only a zoning permit, no inspection is necessary. Electrical upgrades will need only a building permit. Decks and pools (including blow up pools with filter systems) will need both a zoning permit and a building permit.

All Zoning Permit Applications submitted to the Zoning Office for review will be subject to inspections pursuant to Allen Township Ordinance #2001-04. The Board of Supervisors adopted this ordinance pursuant to the Act known as the "Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code".
The Board of Supervisors chose the "third party inspection" approach to administer the codes. A BUILDING PERMIT must be obtained from the following agency:
- Bureau Veritas
Local Office: Orefield, Pa.
Main Office: 790 Parkway Drive, Broomall, Pa. 19008
Tel 877 392-9445
Fax 877 392-9444
Applicants for Building Permits should contact one of these firms and make arrangements for all necessary inspections. Zoning Permits will not be issued without a valid building permit obtained from the inspector. Additionally, occupancy permits will not be issued should a project fail to pass all required inspections.
The following inspections are required:
- Footer and foundation
- Plumbing, electrical, and mechanical
- Frame and masonry
- Final inspections
